This trainer is a dual-purpose system comprising a physical
bench-top unit for fundamental thermodynamics and a software-based
simulator for advanced industrial process control and operation practice.
It models a typical drum-type boiler used in petrochemical and refinery
plants.
Bench Top Unit (Physical Demonstrator)
This component is designed to demonstrate the basic thermodynamic
principal of boiling phenomenon and the pressure-temperature
relationship of saturated steam.
- Vessel:
Stainless steel pressure vessel (304 or 316) with 5 to 50 liters capacity.
- Heating: 2 kW
immersion electrical heater.
- Safety:
Includes a Safety valve and a Temperature controller to
prevent heater burnout.
- Instrumentation:
Equipped with a Bourdon type pressure gauge (0 to 20 bar),
temperature sensor (0 to 200C), and transducers for digital reading of
temperature and pressure.
- Operation:
Maximum operating pressure is 15 bar.
Utility Boiler Simulator Module (Software)
This PC-based software provides realistic training on complex
boiler operations and process control.
- Simulation
Practice: Permits practice of Start up, Shutdown, Normal
operations, and Troubleshooting.
- Complex
Dynamics: Simulates real-world issues like drum
shrink-and-swell phenomena, burner flame out, unstable flame
conditions, and heat transfer across the radiation and convection
sections.
- Advanced
Control Systems: Focuses on studying industry-standard control
schemes:
- Three
elements level control.
- Steam
temperature and pressure control.
- Fuel,
total calorie (BTU), and combustion air control
(including oxygen control and cross limit control).
- Safety
Alerts: Monitors and alerts for abnormal ignition, black smoke
in stack, and explosive situations.
Learning Topics (Tutorial)
The tutorial covers the application, types, and detailed
components of utility boilers, including the deaerator, superheater, draft
system, and steam distribution.
Optional Data Acquisition System (DAQ)
The optional DAQ system allows the user to perform Data
Logging, Signal Analysis, Process Control, and display Real-time
Display and Graphs of experimental results from the physical unit.
