Free Vortex Apparatus

Product Code : SCL-CELE-14011

This apparatus is a self-contained unit designed to visually demonstrate and quantitatively measure the surface profile of a free vortex (or potential vortex). This type of flow is characterized by the absence of an external torque, where the fluid rotates due to the conservation of angular momentum.

1. Key Components and Design

The setup is specifically configured to generate a rotation without imparting significant torque.

  • Vortex Vessel (Cylinder): The fluid is contained in a transparent cylinder.
    • Material: Acrylic (transparent for observation).
    • Dimensions: Diameter 200 mm (approx.), Height 200 mm (approx.).
  • Vortex Generation: Four circumferential jets are placed along the circumference of the cylinder near its bottom.
    • Function: Water injected through these tangential jets causes the fluid to rotate. Crucially, it is assumed that the torque exerted by these jets is negligible once the flow stabilizes, forming a free vortex.
  • Measurement Probe: A pointer is provided.
    • Function: This pointer can be traversed horizontally and vertically across the full diameter of the vessel.
    • Purpose: To precisely measure the shape and height of the hyperbolic water surface profile formed by the free vortex.

2. Water Circulation and Flow Measurement

The system uses a rotameter for convenient, instantaneous flow rate reading.

  • Water Circulation: Provided by an FHP Pump (Crompton make).
    • Sump Tank: Made of Stainless Steel (compatible capacity).
  • Flow Measurement: The flow rate is measured directly using a Rotameter.
  • Control Panel: Includes standard On/Off Switch and Mains Indicator.

3. Purpose and Experiments

The primary experiment is the verification of the theoretical shape of a free vortex.

  1. Vortex Profile Measurement: Measure the relationship between the radius r and the water surface height z at various points.
  2. Theoretical Verification: Compare the measured surface profile with the theoretical equation for a free vortex, which predicts a hyperbolic shape. The product of velocity and radius V cdot r is expected to be constant (conservation of angular momentum).
  3. Visual Observation: Observe the characteristic steep depression at the center of the vortex.
