Mobile Bed & Flow Visualization Unit

Product Code : SCL-CELE-14142

I. Overview and Purpose

This Adjustable Bed Flow Channel Unit is an essential equipment for studying open channel flows in fluid mechanics, hydraulics, civil, mechanical, and related engineering disciplines.1

The unit is particularly useful for Mobile Bed and Flow Visualization , allowing for the demonstration of the fluidization phenomenon and the study of flow situations related to civil engineering structures.

The unit enables two primary study fields:

  1. Mobile Beds Investigation of sediment transport and mobile beds related to water courses and civil engineering structures.2
  2. Flow Visualization Visualization and study of two-dimensional flow patterns.3

II. Apparatus Description

The apparatus is a self-contained system mounted on a metallic structure. It operates by circulating water slowly and at a constant depth through a horizontal channel. Practical exercises are conducted using water and sand.4

The unit is structurally divided into three main sections:

  1. Inlet Tank Made of stainless steel, it features an adjustable gate for flow depth control.
  2. Working Section (Channel) Made of stainless steel, the channel has a working section of 2000 mm x 610 mm.5 It includes a main rail with millimeter rulers supporting a sub-rail for mounting a depth gauge to measure water level.6 The sand bed is placed on a polycarbonate sheet inside the channel. Maximum water depth is approximately 120 mm.
  3. Discharge Tank Made of stainless steel with an overflow mechanism.7 It is divided into two parts: one for sand sedimentation and the second for removing overflow water. A sand filter is placed between the channel and the discharge tank.
  • Circulation The system includes two polyethylene water storage tanks, each approximately 250 liters, and a Centrifugal Pump to supply water. A filter is located at the pump inlet.
  • Measurement An Electromagnetic Flow Meter is included to measure the flow rate.8
  • Models A set of various model engineering structures and baffles are supplied to facilitate different experiments.

III. List of Experiments

The unit supports a wide range of studies in open channel hydraulics:

  1. Flow around model engineering structures (e.g., bridge piers).
  2. Mobile bed experiments and demonstration of the fluidization phenomenon.
  3. Study of meandering water courses characteristics.
  4. Visualization of the behavior of boundary layers.
  5. Demonstration of boundary layer suction.
  6. Experiments of erosion (sediment erosion) and deposition.
  7. Velocity distribution in duct flow.
  8. Practices and tests with engineering models.
  9. Two-dimensional flow visualization by the Ahlborn technique.
  10. Hydraulic analogy to compressible flow.
  11. Flow visualization and study of streamline patterns.
  12. Demonstration of laminar and turbulent flow by flow visualization (Optional).
