Metacentric Height Apparatus (Hb Accessory)

Product Code : SCL-CELE-14028

This apparatus is a laboratory-scale unit used to study the stability of a floating body (pontoon) and to experimentally determine its metacentric height (GM). The metacentric height is the key indicator of a vessel's initial stability.

1. Key Components and Design

The setup involves a floating model, a controlled tilting mechanism, and a precise system for measuring the resulting angle.

  • Pontoon (Floating Model):
    • Size: 300 x 300 mm (approx.).
    • Tilting Mechanism: Features a Horizontal Guide Bar for a sliding weight and a cross bar with a movable hanger. Moving the sliding weight a measured distance creates a controlled heeling moment.
    • Displacement Control: Removable Steel Strips are included to change the total weight (displacement) of the model, allowing for stability analysis under different loading conditions.
  • Water Tank:
    • Size: 550 x 500 x 400 mm (approx.).
    • Window: Has a transparent side (Glass/Perspex) for clear observation of the pontoon's flotation and tilt.
  • Tilt Measurement System:
    • A pendulum (consisting of a weight suspended to a long pointer) measures the angle.
    • The pointer indicates the angle of tilt on a graduated arc.

2. Experimental Purpose

The primary experiment is the inclining experiment, used to calculate the metacentric height (GM).

  1. Stability Study: The apparatus demonstrates how stability changes by altering the pontoon's displacement and the location of the center of gravity (CG).
  2. GM Determination: The metacentric height (GM) is calculated by relating the known applied heeling moment (weight times distance) to the measured angle of tilt. This verifies hydrostatic principles governing ship stability.
