Impulse Turbine Apparatus

Product Code : SCL-CELE-14144

I. Overview and Principle

This apparatus is a small-scale Impulse Turbine unit designed for experimental study in Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics laboratories. Impulse turbines are widely used for pumping liquids in various applications, including domestic, industrial, and irrigation systems.

Principle: An impulse turbine operates by converting the momentum from a high-velocity jet of water impacting the turbine blades into rotational mechanical power.

II. Apparatus Description

The Impulse Turbine Test Apparatus is a compact unit integrated into a robust, mobile frame, with all components and instrumentation manufactured from corrosion-resistant materials. It is designed to be used in conjunction with a separate service unit for water supply and control.

  • Jet System Water is supplied via an inlet manifold to four equally spaced jets aimed at the turbine runner. Each jet can be individually controlled using ball valves.
  • Runner The runner is mounted on a horizontal shaft.
  • Visibility A clear acrylic splash guard is fitted to allow maximum visibility of the internal workings and the jet impact.
  • Instrumentation The unit incorporates a pressure sensor to measure the water inlet condition (head). This pressure can be precisely controlled using the software provided with the companion service unit.

III. Experimental Capabilities

The apparatus allows students to conduct comprehensive tests to determine the turbine’s performance characteristics:

  1. Turbine Characteristics Determine the relationships between key parameters:
    • Volume flow rate
    • Head (water inlet pressure)
    • Torque produced
    • Power output
    • Efficiency (hydraulic and overall)
    • Rotational speed
  2. Control Comparison Comparison of different control methods, specifically nozzle control versus throttling control, on the impulse turbine’s performance.

IV. Optional Enhancement

  • Computer-Based Learning (CBL) Software This option includes software to help students understand and conduct experiments, tabulate results, and plot performance graphs.
