The Hydraulic Ram (or Hydram) is a unique device used to pump a small quantity of water to a high head using the energy from a large quantity of water available at a low head. Its operation is based on the water hammer principle: when flowing water is suddenly stopped in a long pipe, a pressure wave travels along the pipe creating a powerful surge of pressure.

The experimental setup includes a pipe section fitted with a pulse valve and a non-return valve. Water flows from a supply reservoir connected to an overhead tank. An air vessel is situated above the valve chamber to smooth the cyclic fluctuations in the delivery line. The closing pressure of the pulse valve can be adjusted to change the operating characteristics of the Ram. The setup is self-contained with closed loop water circulation, and the flow rates of both the useful water (delivered to the high head) and the waste water are measured using two separate measuring tanks and an electronic stop watch.
