The Hydraulic
Ram Pump Demonstrator is an experimental unit used to study the operation
of the Hydraulic Ram, a simple hydraulic machine that exploits the water
hammer effect to pump water. It harnesses the kinetic energy of a large
quantity of falling water (at a low head) from a source to lift a smaller
quantity of water to a higher elevation (high head). This device is
particularly useful in locations with limited power supply, provided a usable
fall of at least one meter from the source to the pump is available.
The unit
is connected to a hydraulic bench for water supply and consists of a header
tank (supply) and a delivery tank (at a higher elevation). The pump
itself features a valve block with a crucial air vessel to reduce
hydraulic shock. The operational cycle is driven by inner and outer valves
in the supply line. The closing pressure and pump cycle time can be adjusted by
applying different weights on the outer valve platform. A pressure
gauge measures the pressure fluctuations generated by the water hammer
effect.
