Discharge Through Venturimeter

Product Code : SCL-CELE-14001

This equipment is a self-contained water recirculating unit designed to study and calibrate the Venturimeter, a device used to measure the flow rate of fluid in a pipe by measuring the pressure drop created by an accelerated flow through a constricted throat.1

1. Key Components and Design

The apparatus is centered around the Venturimeter, with transparent components for easy observation.

  • Venturimeter: Made of Clear Acrylic (transparent) and is compatible with a 1 inch Diameter Pipe. It is installed in a pipeline emerging from a common manifold.
  • Pressure Measurement:
    • Device: Differential Pressure Manometer to accurately measure the pressure difference ($\Delta P$) between the wide section (inlet) and the narrow section (throat) of the meter.
  • Valves: All ball valves are specified with robust operating conditions:
    • Operating Temperature Range: -40°F to 302°F.
    • Working Pressure: In the range of 600 psi, with vacuum pressure up to $2 \times 10^{-1}$ psi.

2. Water Circulation and Flow Measurement

The system uses a closed-loop system and a precise volumetric method for validation.

  • Water Circulation: Provided by a 0.5 HP Pump (Crompton/Kirloskar make).
    • Sump Tank: 50 Liters capacity, made of Stainless steel 304 grade (1.2 mm thick).
  • Flow Rate Measurement (Actual Flow): This accurate method is used for calibration.
    • Achieved using a Measuring Tank with a Piezometer (25 Liters capacity).
    • Measuring Tank Material: Stainless steel 304 grade (1.2 mm thick).
    • An Electronic Stop Watch is provided to measure the time required to collect a known volume, calculating the actual discharge (Q actual).

3. Purpose

The primary experiment is to verify the principle of the Venturimeter based on the Bernoulli equation and to determine its Coefficient of Discharge (Cd). This is achieved by comparing the actual flow rate (measured volumetrically) with the theoretical flow rate (calculated using the differential pressure reading).
